A Matter of The Heart

Merry Christmas Dear Ones!

Ready or not, we’re into another Christmas season!  For me, it’s one of the best times of the year.

I was reading from Luke 2 this morning.  It’s the classic account of that first Christmas.  We’ve all read it many times.  But this morning, a phrase jumped out at me, and I’ve been thinking about it all morning.

After receiving the announcement from the angel Gabriel, the declarations from Elizabeth, Zechariah, and the shepherds in the hills above Bethlehem, vs 19 says, “Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.”  The Greek word for ponder is the word symballo, which means to consider, wrestle with, and consider the implications.

To “treasure these things in her heart” meant that she placed the true identity of Jesus in the deepest part of who she was – her heart.

Our heart is at the core of who we are and what we really believe.  I call it our “chooser muscle.”   Proverbs 4:23 says “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.”

Our heart is really who we are, at the deepest level.  It’s where “Lordship” is established.  This is the heart of the Shema (daily primary prayer for Jews), “To love the Lord with all your heart.’

So, back to Mary.  To treasure up all the things spoken about Jesus and treasure them in her heart means that as tough times came, she never doubted. And the tough times would be many:   the rejection of Jesus by the religious leaders and the Jewish people, betrayal by his closest friends, and finally to be crucified.  But through it all, she never stopped believing in Jesus.  His truth was in her heart!

I hope this Christmas you will take a look at your heart.  In all the activities, keep Christ central in your heart and in your life!

Merry Christmas,
